The Renegade FAQs

What is a South Sea pearl?

South Sea pearls are the largest and rarest pearls in the world. Known for their exceptional lustre and naturally occurring shades - from luminous white and silver to rich gold and champagne - they are prized for their size, rarity, and individuality. Renegade South Sea pearls are grown in saltwater oysters in the warm ocean waters off Indonesia.

How are South Sea pearls different from freshwater pearls?

South Sea pearls are prized for their exceptional size, natural satin lustre and rarity. Cultivated in saltwater oysters, they typically grow larger and develop a thicker nacre, giving them a soft, luminous glow and enduring value.

Freshwater pearls are grown in freshwater mussels and are generally smaller, more abundant, and more varied in shape.

In essence, South Sea pearls are celebrated for their rarity, size, and understated radiance - placing them among the most luxurious pearls in the world.

Are your South Sea pearls cultivated or wild?

While a very small number of South Sea pearls occur naturally in the wild, they are exceptionally rare. Our South Sea pearls are cultivated under expert care, allowing nature to form each pearl slowly over time. This process supports the oyster’s natural ability to create nacre, resulting in the exceptional lustre and character for which South Sea pearls are renowned.

Why choose a South Sea pearl necklace from Renegade Pearls?

Because our pearls don’t conform. We hand-select each one for its character - marks, lustre and story - so you’re choosing the pearl itself, not just the necklace. Bold, unique, and unapologetically beautiful, every Renegade pearl is a one-off treasure made to reflect your individuality.

What size South Sea pearl should I choose?

We categorise our pearls by presence:

  • Elegant (up to 9.9mm): Refined, versatile, wearable for everyday or bridal looks.
  • Commanding (10–10.9mm): Noticeable, confident, ideal for subtle impact.
  • Grand (11–11.9mm): Substantial and striking, perfect for luxury layering.
  • Mighty (12–12.9mm): Bold and magnetic statement pieces.
  • Majestic (13–13.9mm): Rare, remarkable, and visually impactful.
  • Supreme (14mm+): Extraordinary collector-level pearls, show-stopping in scale.

What chains are available for South Sea pearl necklaces?

We have three distinctive chain styles, designed to complement the pearl’s natural beauty

  • REFINED: Elegantly timeless cable chain. Minimalist, understated, and versatile
  • MAVERICK: Our signature mini paperclip chain, with every link textured to catch the light. Bold, modern, and full of personality
  • TWISTED: Singapore diamond-cut twist chain, fluid and sparkling with intense brilliance

What chain lengths are available?

Our necklaces come in two lengths, each with continuous adjustments for a perfect fit:

  • 45cm chain: Adjustable from 41-45cm
  • 55cm chain: Adjustable from 51-55cm

This allows the pearl to sit elegantly at your preferred neckline or layer beautifully with other pieces.

Are South Sea pearls suitable for bridal jewellery?

Absolutely. South Sea pearls have a natural radiance that feels effortless and timeless—but at Renegade Pearls, they’re never ordinary. We hand-select pearls for their character and individuality, so the necklace you choose is truly one of a kind. Perfect for brides who want something a little less traditional and a lot more you

How should I care for my South Sea pearl necklace?

South Sea pearls are naturally radiant and deserve gentle care. After wearing, wipe your necklace with a soft, dry cloth to remove traces of perfume, skincare, or natural oils. Pearls should always be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.

Store your necklace separately from other jewellery to prevent scratching. Your piece arrives in a Renegade Pearls box, ideal for safekeeping. Avoid prolonged exposure to chemicals, water, or harsh sunlight. With care your pearls will retain their lustre and beauty for years to come.
