Caring for Your South Sea Pearl Jewellery
We want your chosen Renegades to stay glowing for years. Pearls are precious gems - organic and a little bit tender - so a touch of TLC goes a long way. Here’s how to love them well.
Daily love
- Last on, first off. Put pearls on after perfume, hairspray, lotions and SPF; take them off before cleansing or bedtime. Pearls are porous and can absorb oils, chemicals and moisture
- Wipe after wear. A quick buff with a very soft, clean cloth removes skin oils and keeps that satiny lustre
- Keep them dry. Remove before showering, swimming, gym sessions and cleaning. Chlorine, sweat and soaps aren’t friends with pearls or plating
Cleaning (simple & safe)
- Pearls: For routine care, just a soft dry (or slightly damp) cloth. For an occasional deep clean, lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap; rinse and dry fully. Never ultrasonic or steam
- Gold vermeil: Gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth. If needed, use mild soap in lukewarm water, rinse, pat dry—no chemical dips or abrasive polishing as these can strip the gold layer
- Rhodium-plated sterling silver: Clean with mild soap and water and a soft cloth; avoid abrasive cloths, harsh cleaners, or polishing compounds that can thin the rhodium
Storage
- Soft and separate. Store in a soft pouch or lined box, away from harder gems and metals that can scratch nacre. Close clasps to avoid tangles
- Not too parched. Avoid prolonged, very dry/airtight storage and direct sunlight or heat; pearls prefer a gentle, stable environment
What to avoid (for longevity)
- Ultrasonic or steam cleaners; alcohol/acetone/bleach-based products; toothpaste/baking soda; rough fabrics or paper towels
- Heavy polishing on vermeil or rhodium plating; abrasive silver cloths on plated areas
